Cloninger goes on to explain how his book takes the samples and examples approach but that both should be used in conjunction with each other. I whole-heartedly agree. The Web Designer's Idea Book also takes the learning by example approach, but the difference is that Fresher Styles intentionally side steps mainstream design patterns to focus on the counterculture and design outliers of the web.

There are 8 distinct styles that Curt introduces and characterizes in the book: "No Style, Late(st) Modern Style, Psychedelic Minimalist Style, Dot Matrix Style, 1996 Dirt Style, Corkboard Sprawl Style, Fullscreen Fashion Style & Hand-Drawn Analog Style". If you think this list sounds a bit absurd, you should know that he admittedly left out "1970s Dayglow Vector Style, Dusty Cowboy Style & Chrome Sheen". The purpose of this distinctly idiosyncratic taxonomy isn't to canonize the web; it's simply a quirky, off-the-cuff lens through which new design ideas can be discussed and digested.

This combination of unusual design examples and curious categorization is certainly deliberate, as is the psychedelic design of the book's cover. The intention is not to teach tried-and-true design technique, to make you a more efficient designer, or even to showcase the latest trends. Instead, Cloninger aims to invoke thought and avoid what he describes as inbreeding among web designers. The problem is that the circle of influence through which individuals become web professionals is a rather narrow one. We all learn by the same popular tutorials and we all align our work to the archetype designs of the industry. This book will force you to think outside this tiny box, simply by showing you that there is no box.

This is not a know it all book on Perl, but it will get you started coding and executing right away.
I liked the way Les takes you through coding a program step by step and then explaining what each step accomplishes. The book has about 20 coding and execution examples, some just pure perl, some using HTML and some with a little javascript. Even if you don't know these areas you get the feel for how Perl interfaces with them.
The book will also take you into ways to do some data base interfacing. Les uses Microsofts Access for the data base example, but will also work if you know mySQL. Les will even give you steps for setting up the PWS (Personal Web Server) on non Windows XP operating systems like W98.
The last chapter takes you through a complete case study using a contact data base using some web design principles.
With the exception of a a few minor coding errors, this book in my opinion is top notch and the very best for getting a good head start on learning Perl.

This is a great book for system architects who build complex, distributed, advanced applications using XML Web services in .NET, or would like to. While admittedly not a code-centric tutorial guide, it does serve to clarify many of the questions a developer considering the Microsoft .NET Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 2.0 would have, and demystifies many of the questions posed about interoperability between WSE versions and across platforms like .NET and J2EE.

Contrary to the criticism that some have unfairly labeled the book with, I didn't find the material to be rehashed MSDN articles that would be otherwise easily accessible on that site. Rather, author Jeannine Hall Gailey gives an academic overview of the areas for WSE 2.0 under development by those architecting the web service model on a macro level (BEA, IBM, Microsoft, Sun, etc.). Instead of regurgitated programming articles, Jeannine (whose body of work in writing about WSE and the high-end use of SOAP in .NET environments is most impressive) presents a complimentary collection of easy-to-follow articles on advanced uses for extending SOAP's capabilities, using a writing voice that's welcome and friendly. (You'll surely appreciate this latter benefit, as the material can get quite complex at times.)

So rather than give you code to nail down a specific problem, an overview of the web services model and of next-gen apps relying on SOAP is examined. And you'll more well-rounded and better off because of it. When used in combination with the code found on her articles at MSDN, they make for a very effective guide to helping you build powerful systems.

At 232 pages, the book is a great quick read, giving the reader a high-level understanding of many of the concepts being discusses and/or enforced by the web services powers-that-be. The major WS-* considerations such as attachments, security, reliable messaging, coordination and policy enforcement are described. The book is written beautifully and organized logically, with easy to understand hypothetical scenarios.

The book makes mention of SOAP 1.2, and while it admits to leaning towards the SOAP 1.1 spec for the moment, does take the time to mention the differences between the two. There's also a very healthy amount of information for two technologies you're likely to have lots of questions about - encryption and DIME attachments.

There was a terse mention of working with SOAP messages across SMTP, and I would have liked to see more of a discussion on this topic. There's lots of good information about other transport protocols like HTTP, TCP and UDP, but sadly, not much on SMTP for building secure messaging systems over e-mail. But I can't pin this minor shortcoming directly on the author - the Web is currently sorely lacking such information outside the scope of mentioning that SOAP can transport across SMTP.

But aside from that, this book is a great read for those looking to take SOAP to the next level and really leverage the WSE in their applications.

The book's title is misleading because the book will NOT teach you how to actually manage a Mac web server.

I didnot know anything about Mac server and now, I am pretty knowledgeable about all possible options to choose from for how to use a Mac server.

What I really appreciated was the panel of options Hart describes of web software.

This is an excellent resource for beginners and intermediate users alike!
I really enjoy the way that Mr. Bennett builds logically from one exercise unto the next. His analogies are clear and the pace spot on.
I found myself having time to soak in the previous exercise while being able to advance unto the next without having to entirely break my train of thought. The chapters aren't burdensomely long but they still manage to be complete and give one a sense of accomplishment. There are summaries and review questions at the end of each chapter.

If you are more design oriented rather than technically oriented you will appreciate the way the author gives a sense of instant gratification upon completion of each task as you can immediately see how this could be implemented towards designing an attractive web page.

Lastly, I actually enjoyed the fact that the book wasn't too heavy on graphical illustrations, I appreciated that each illustration presented served a purpose.

This book is essential for someone who owns the Creative Suite for Designers. If you have had it before, it brings you up to date on the changes and additions to each individual program. If, like me, you've owned individual programs in the suite but never the entire suite, it gives you a general overview of the purposes and capabilities of each individual program, and an idea of how to make the Suite work together seamlessly and in an intelligently coordinated manner.

The initial overview serves to:
* define the scope of each program
* help you set Suite-wide preferences for color management, etc.,
* familiarizes you with elements of the user interface, concepts like layers, shortcuts, and menus that are common to all programs,
* shows you how to move the same file from program to program or work with files created in another Suite application
* and just generally points out ways to work more efficiently.

From there, you proceed to program-specific details on each of the seven component programs. Each program is given sufficient attention that you become familiar with its capabilities, interface, and very general usage instructions for common tasks. This overview or introduction covers the important features and is sufficient to make you feel comfortable in the workspace and eager to experiment, but is not a substitute for a book that goes into more depth and specifics on the type of work that you plan to do with an individual program.

Looking over the programs I know fairly well (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat), I found the information to be both general and relevant to all types of users. In Photoshop, for example, which has two constituencies (the photographer and the designer) both needs were well covered. Since this is the first time that I have owned Photoshop Extended, I appreciated the introduction to those features. The coverage of the other two is equally good and, since I was upgrading from several versions back, I really benefited for the review and update.

I was vaguely familiar with both InDesign and Illustrator and had often seen other people work with them. I found that the explanations were very understandable and sufficient to allow me to create a basic document in either, but not a complex project. (Both these programs have steep learning curves).

Flash and Fireworks were two programs I've even never seen used. I now understand them enough to know that I'll probably never need Flash (thank goodness!) but I really should get to know Fireworks better. I'm actively getting familiar with the program and I can understand the explanations given and the concepts involved since it intersects so well with both Photoshop and Dreamweaver. The instructions in this book are sufficient to get me started and keep me entertained for a while.

So, all in all, I'm delighted to have gotten the book. It is fact-oriented, not project-oriented. It is not aimed at the professional who has been working with all these programs for a long time, but anyone else (from beginner to strong intermediate) will benefit from the coordinated overview. Sure, it's possible to just play around with the programs until you figure them out (or, at least, those parts you actually need), but there is no substitute for laying a good groundwork of basic skills and practical knowledge about each program and a clear and up-to-date overview of where everything fits in.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book can be 'long winded' at times, it is still a book with a lot of rich information on SOA technology. It is not a book about how to perform SOA implementation, but contains abstract problems and how SOA solves those problems. Thomas Erl is one of a few technical authors I've found to have a gift of communicating well on paper, and this book's content moves along in a graceful manner. If you are looking for a very technical implementation book on SOA then this is not the right book (though I'd look at some of the author's more recent releases for that). This is not a book to be read quickly, as the author presents the information in a 'beefy' style with a lot of information, some perhaps redundant, but I believe is there to drive home his message. As a software engineer for nearly 30 years, I've read nearly 100 technical books, but I must say that this one (my first one of Thomas Erl's Series) stands out as one of the best. SOA is a very complicated topic, and there is not a short-cut to fully digesting it. I would highly recommend this book to be part of your SOA reference library.

I realize other reviews have slammed this book, but I didn't think it was too bad at all. I just took the CIW 1D0-450 exam today and passed with a 93% on the Internet Systems Management section and a 73% on the Advanced Systems Management section (83% overall), and this book was the only study material I used. Granted, this book could have used a little more thorough explanation of the advanced topics, and there were some silly mistakes in the testing material, but overall it covered 98% of everything I saw on the exam. The 1D0-450 is a fairly tough test, and this is not a entry level "For Dummies" type of book. I have also recently completed the Master CIW Designer cert., and this is the most difficult CIW test I have taken to date. Just be sure to read, and re-read, and re-read again every section, and take all the practice tests. Hey I got through it, and I'm sure with sufficient preparation so can you!

Just like the author's cPanel book which I also enjoyed, this book was
logically ordered, clear and easy to understand. It also includes
screenshots of virtually every part of WHM you could ever want to see.

As expected, it takes you step by step from the beginning to getting
into advanced WHM functionality. An advantage to this text though is
that it includes the author's own experience (most of which I agreed
with) on what things you should and should not do. If you don't know
yet, WHM allows access to all sorts of settings that aren't always
going to be suitable for all server applications. He does more than
just saying how to do it; he provides explanation on when you should
or shouldn't use something which is great.

If you're a seasoned WHM veteran, you may find a thing here and there
that you weren't familiar with (I did), but I think the most value is
going to be had by those who are new to cPanel/WHM. If you're making
the move towards becoming a Reseller and you're completely new to WHM,
this book is going to save you tons of support tickets and headaches.

When being your own web host you should be technically inclined and have basic knowledge of operating systems, understand technical terms, understand how to setup a server environment (such as: DNS, IIS, Apache, etc.) have basic knowledge of scripting languages and databases (PHP, Perl, MySQL, etc.), be familiar with current technologies, and have a basic understanding of hardware and server components.

There could be many more pros & cons but I've pointed out some of the major ones. Managing a web server starts as a full time job, you must constantly monitor its performance and security. This can sometimes be an exhausting task, especially if you currently have other responsibilities. Though, the control you will have over your website and its performance is rewarding enough. You no longer have to wait for technical support or approval to install a script onto the server. You can have as many websites and databases you want, as long as your hardware can handle it. Ask yourself, how technically advanced are you? Many times you do not have to be a tech guru or anything of the sort, but you must be very resourceful. You must know how to find resolutions and answers to problems, quickly and efficiently. This means you must be internet savvy. Not just the average surfer, who surfs aimlessly, but you must be the surfer who can always find what they are looking for. This is key, because with any server environment you are going to run into problems and finding the answers are most accomplished online, using multiple resources, search techniques, and engines. Sure you can hire someone to fix your problems, but as we should have learned from the "web hosting", having someone do it for you isn't always the best option. Google or Yahoo! should have been your second option (the two largest search engines). Then search other smaller and niche search engines. A good search site which makes use of Google's operator tags is http://www.soople.com Next you should search within forums and discussion groups. If you are pretty internet savvy and have a plentiful or few forums and discussion groups which you frequent then you might actually visit those places before visiting Google or Yahoo!. You can even visit those before visiting the developer site since it is a trusted source, but I wouldn't recommend it, I still would go to the developers' site first. Okay, so now we have planted our feet and have familiarized ourselves with being internet (search) savvy. We are ready to purchase a server!

When making a server purchase you need to consider a few things before doing so. What to buy? A top of the line, quadruple processor, and super fast turbo server is always ideal, but many times it is not logical or affordable. Therefore, you need to weigh your options (sensibly).

What to buy?

First determine your budget. Be realistic and expect to spend at least $2,500 for a low-end server. For a low-end, quality server with other needed equipment and services I spent a little over $4,500 easily.

Determine your ISP (broadband) provider. Research and speak with several different vendors before deciding which broadband solution best suit your needs. Each provider plan is different and has different benefits, determine the best one which fits your needs. Bandwidth should be put into consideration when choosing your ISP.

A backup device should be purchased before implementing a server install. The backup device should be double the server storage space. This could be a standalone unit like an external hard drive or network storage device or the backup device could be multiple devices such as: backup tapes, disc, etc. The reason the backup device should be larger is because you want to be able to have months worth of backups and not just weekly or monthly backups. You should have at least 24 weeks of backups without the concern of storage space. The backup device or safe deposits should also be external, removable, and portable. This is so the backups can be stored in a remote location. Usually for safe-keeping, in event of a theft or disaster.

Determine your daily traffic goal (the daily traffic which you hope to see within 1 year - be realistic), divide that number by the daily traffic you currently receive, and then multiply that number by 5. That is the total number of GB space you need.
Example:

Daily Traffic Goal: 10,000 (Divided by) Current Daily Traffic: 500 (Times X) 5 = 100GB

In the example you should purchase a 100GB Hard Drive, it is best to buy 2 or more drives oppose to 1. In this case, since 50GB drives do not exist or harder to find, you would buy two 60GB drives giving you a total of 120GB. 2 or more drives are usually needed in a server to configure the proper RAID option, in some cases 3 or more are needed. Your backup storage space should be a minimum capacity of 200GB (or 240GB, optional).

Determine your memory. If your web server daily traffic goal is 500,000 then I would recommend at least 2GB worth of memory. If it is a shared server, meaning it also has other server services running on the machine, especially a mail server or database server (which is not recommended) then your memory should at least be 3GB or more. Otherwise you can think small and upgrade as needed, a 1GB memory stick should be fine for starters.

Determine your network components, which NIC card best performs under high traffic levels and which router best performs for your LAN / web server. It is best to get a router which has a built-in firewall (commonly known as a "hardware firewall"). Your ISP may provide you with a router or hardware firewall, this is how they are able to authorize your traffic on their network. Like a cable box does for cable television. The router also shares your IP address with other clients on your network. This enables you to share your internet connection without having to get a different IP from your ISP. The hardware firewall is simply a router with a built-in firewall, which means it shares your IP address as well as provides added protection to your network. It blocks bad addresses and ports at the forefront, before it can even make it to your computer. It is not recommended to rely only on a hardware firewall for security, this is just the first step. It is recommended to also include a software firewall (firewall software which installs on your computer) and it is recommended to continue timely security practices, such as updating and patching your system on a scheduled routine.

Determine your processor speed and power. Regardless of the amount of traffic you are expecting I would recommend a dual processor or greater. A dual processor or greater is best because if your website unexpectedly take off then you will be well prepared and if you host other server options or websites on the same server then you will have better performance. At the time of this writing the 64-bit platform is the processor direction. 3.8GHz is the most available speed. If your pockets can afford the latest technologies then that is ideal, but keep in mind at this particular time a 64-bit compatible processor is not necessary, without having many applications that require or deliver on that platform. That is a lot of speed going no where fast. Also, remember the power of the 64-bit platform and the greater the processor speed the more heat it produces, therefore it must be cooled much more rapidly and efficiently. At this time a dual 32-bit, 2.8GHz - 3.2GHz processor will suffice (even that is way more than enough). Though, if your pockets can afford it then the latest and greatest would be fine, you will be well prepared. Otherwise, do like most people and upgrade when the time comes.

Make sure you have a CD/RW drive. A floppy disk drive is not needed, but I do recommend it for making system restore disk. The CD/RW drive is needed because you need some type of removable storage device. You never know when you need to install a driver from a different location...like a ethernet driver. An external CD/RW drive is the best option, especially if you have multiple machines.

Choose your operating system carefully. Choose the vendor which you are most comfortable with. Do not choose a MAC if you never used a MAC before. Just because your friend suggests it and says it is a piece of cake does not mean it will be for you. You are trying to get a web server online not re-learn a whole new system. Stay focused and grounded. If you are comfortable with Microsoft then go with Microsoft, regardless if the IT person at your job says Microsoft products are unsecure, Linux or Unix is more secure and much better for a web server. If you have never used Linux or (especially) Unix then you will be in for a ride of your life. Your web server experience will soon become a nightmare and you will have wasted thousands of dollars on equipment. Go with what you know, not what you are told. Each platform has its pros and cons: Microsoft is the user-friendly of them all; Mac is the web/graphic developer of them all; Linux is the open-source/developers paradise of them all; Unix is the most secure of them all. Each of them can be tweaked in ways to provide a solid, quality platform, it is best to stick with what you already know.

You should install on your system all the web services (such as: Apache, IIS, etc.), applications (such as: backup device software, RAID (Array) Manager), scripting languages (such as: PHP, Perl, etc.), CGI, Database (such as: MySQL, Microsoft SQL, etc.), and a web log analyzer (such as: weblog expert, nihuo, etc.). It is also recommended to perform system updates, security patches, and firewall installs and configurations. It is sometimes best to leave the security installs and configurations for after you have the system functioning properly to avoid any uncalculated problems. This way when you install the firewall and something stops working properly like connecting to your website from outside your network, you can troubleshoot assuming that it is the firewall, therefore you would begin by opening port 80 on the firewall. This method can save you a lot of hassle, but can sometimes be considered the unsecure method, especially if you don't have a hardware firewall already in place.

Next, there are a few things to consider before installing and configuring a server. Where to put it? A secluded, cool location is ideal, but if this cannot be accomplished then adjustments can be made.

Where to put it?

Locate a location within your home that is static-free, we do not want to put the server on the carpet, near curtains, or anything else that can produce a static reaction. The reason for this is that you do not want the server internal components to receive a static charge and short circuit.

The location should be a cool environment, preferably below room temperature. The reason for a cool area is because servers (as well as desktop computers) produce large amounts of heat, the more heat it produces the more it needs to cool off. If the server is not kept cool, then this can lead to the server hanging and then eventually crashing. It's the same result of when a car overheats, it stops running. You can keep a server internal components cool by keeping the room cool, additionally you can add more fans to the server which cools the server internal components, you can also position a standalone fan directly at the server back panel and constantly have the fan cool the server internal components. Depending on how cool your room is and how much heat your server produces, getting more fans for your server may be a must and not an option.

It is suggested that the server is at a higher level within your house (mid-floor), because if it is in the basement and a flood occurs it could ruin it. If it is in the attic and the sun beams on the attic for hours the server could overheat. Mid-floor level is usually the cooler place within the home, but these recommendations is optional and you should put the server in the most comfortable and convenient space following the rest of the guidelines.

Be sure the area you choose is not damp or wet (no leaks, moisture, near any liquids, or near a window "especially open"). We all know what can happen when electrical components get wet.

The server should sit at least 4" inches from the ground

Be sure a working electrical outlet is near. It is an important to have a power supply, a good brand is APC. Having a power supply can save you from electrical outages, blackouts, and brownouts. Having a power supply helps the server keep its power, remain stable, and unaffected when there is an outage, as well it protects your server against electrical shock. If your outage remains more than 5 minutes it is recommended to begin backing up anything deemed important and shut the computer down voluntarily as well as any other electrical attached devices.

Have a LAN line near and also a phone jack (if you plan on using the server for any dial-up services). It is not recommended to use your web service with a dial-up connection. A broadband connection or greater is recommend for optimal performance. The LAN line should never come from your wall and plug directly into your server, it should plug into a hardware firewall (usually a router with a built-in firewall).

Depending on the size of the server and the internal components the server may be extremely noisy and loud, especially with the fans going. It is suggested to have the server in a secluded location which is not near any peaceful area of the house, such as: bedroom.

Those are all some basic things to consider before hosting your own server. Hosting your own server is not an easy task, but once you have had some time and experience with it, it becomes a breeze. You will have a better web hosting experience, you will be more in tune and reliant to your customers, and you will gain greater technical aptitude. Hosting your own web server is rewarding, useful, and gives you the opportunity to host unlimited websites, databases, services, etc.

He leaves it to the service provider to make that happen, without knowing exactly how it’s done.

It’s much the same for e-commerce managers looking for a web host. While hosting is the lifeblood of the site, details such as server configuration and PCI compliance protocols are beyond the expertise of most business managers—they depend on the web host to deliver what it says it will, without firsthand knowledge of precisely how the process works.

Given the technical issues involved in web hosting, it should be information technology specialists, and not marketers, who choose a web host, says Paul Goodman, senior vice president of e-commerce and marketing at Dale and Thomas Popcorn, which operates an e-commerce site, about a dozen stores and a wholesale business. “They need to ultimately own it, because if the site’s not working, and it’s not a software issue, then it’s a hardware issue, and marketing people don’t run that.”

But that doesn’t mean smart business leaders come to the table uninformed when their retail site is looking for a web host. Scalability, redundancy and co-location issues, seamless rollover ability and security all can have a profound impact on the site’s business results. When selecting a web host, they’re just some of the top-level questions that business managers should have on their own checklist before handing off more detailed questions about the technical interface to IT.

“It’s going to come down to knowing what questions to ask and making sure you are contractually protected,” says Brian Walker, senior e-commerce analyst at Forrester Research Inc.

Host your own

Not everyone has to shop for a web host, as larger online retailers often have the resources to host their own sites. That’s what Lillian Vernon Corp. did when Goodman was head of e-commerce there earlier in his career. With an IT staff on site 24/7 and robust infrastructure to support a high-volume catalog call center, it was a relatively easy matter to add e-commerce hosting, he says.

For DaleandThomasPopcorn.com, Goodman decided it made more sense to outsource hosting of the site to web design and hosting vendor AmericanEagle.com. “We don’t have 24/7 coverage here, and we are not a redundant facility,” he says. “I don’t believe anyone should host their own site unless they’ve got those things in place.”

Some retailers, like Goodman, prefer the convenience of dealing with one provider to handle site design, development and hosting. DaleandThomasPopcorn.com was completely redesigned last year by AmericanEagle, which also did all the development. “Web hosting was actually the last thing we looked at,” Goodman says. “The first was to find someone to design and build the site on a stable platform. AmericanEagle also does hosting, and they own their own servers. They gave us a separate proposal for hosting, and it came back competitive with others we looked at.”

Dale and Thomas Popcorn pays a fixed monthly rate of “between $5,000 and $10,000” just for web hosting, Goodman says. That flat rate can go up if demand spikes unexpectedly during a given month.

While price is important, performance is crucial for an e-commerce site. A retailer should negotiate agreements on the percentage of time the site must be available, bandwidth levels during peak shopping times and other services levels, Forrester’s Walker says.

A host’s ability to add capacity quickly is important. “You don’t want to find out when your web site goes down Dec. 15, or when Oprah mentions your product on her show, that you have issues that have been overlooked,” Walker says.

Determining the capacity a retailer requires starts with an internal review by the retailer of how many pages and products the site will have, and how much traffic it expects to get.

Along with the ability to scale up quickly, the web host also should be equipped to handle the increasing number of third-party applications tying into e-commerce platforms, such as customer review services and recommendation engines. “Many retailers are expecting the ability to recreate e-commerce features they see on the sites of big retailers, such as Amazon or Newegg,” says Kieth Spohn, product manager at web hosting vendor 1 & 1. That means a host must demonstrate it can easily and securely integrate and serve third-party applications.

Redundant data

E-retailers also need to consider both data redundancy and co-location when choosing a web host. Redundancy means storing the data on more than one server, so that the site can continue to function if a primary server fails. Online exercise equipment retailer SmoothFitness.com stores the data for its multiple sites on three dedicated servers at its hosting company, INetU Inc., to guard against outages. Walker says e-retailers should check out a web host’s path to seamless rollover; that is, the host’s ability to transfer a retailer’s data from one server to another as needed, without a hiccup in service.

But what if something happens to temporarily knock an entire city or one of its major ISPs temporarily off the Internet? That’s where co-location comes in. Ideally, a retailer’s data should be stored at a second location far enough removed from the first set of servers so that it’s not likely to be affected by whatever is affecting them. If not, “you and your host facility are both down, so redundancy does nothing for that,” says David Wertheimer, vice president of operations at Smooth Fitness. The King of Prussia, Penn.-based retailer weathered a temporary issue with major ISP Comcast in nearby Philadelphia without interruption earlier this year, because it’s hosted outside of the area.

With new viruses, scams, and other new online threats continually emerging, securing a site is an ongoing challenge. So a great deal of talk around web hosting now centers around compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard developed by the major card brands to prevent compromise of cardholder data. Any company that handles payment card data—including web hosting companies—must comply with PCI standards or risk fines and the suspension of their right to handle card transactions.

Specific PCI requirements apply to hosting companies such as how they manage security patches and anti-virus updates. But all a retailer’s business managers need to know about a web host in this regard is whether it is PCI compliant. Visa maintains a list of PCI-compliant hosting firms on its web site. To be listed, the service provider is required to hire a Visa-approved security company to conduct a yearly on-site audit and quarterly scans of its hosting network.

“If the company hosting your site on is not on that list, you need to find out if they have an audit scheduled or the status of their last audit, and find out why they’re not yet certified,” says Tony Svanascini, CEO of AmericanEagle.com.

Because a site’s business managers generally delegate technical aspects of web hosting to IT staffers, part of choosing a web host is finding a company that’s trustworthy. One good measure of that is the quality and responsiveness of customer service and how quickly and how well questions—any questions—are handled by the hosting company.

This is something retailers can gauge by talking to other customers of the prospective host. Experts says retailers are best served by choosing a web host that will enable them to call and talk to support staff familiar with their site, to whom the site is more than just a collection of anonymous files on their servers.
